Kapawi Ecolodge (4D,5D)

Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve was built by the indigenous Achuar nationals using traditional techniques combined with low-impact technologies (solar energy, biodegradable soaps, four-stroke and electric outboard motors) to lessen the impact of this Ecuadorian Amazon tour. Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve is also one of the last places where you can interact with an ancient culture on there terms. You will meet the proud Achuar, an Indigenous group of the Amazon that managed to remain isolated until the 1970’s. The Achuar have inhabited the Ecuador Amazon basin for thousands of years, developing a vast, invaluable knowledge on their environment, land use and resource management which has allowed both the people and ecosystems to survive.

While traveling in small groups no larger than 10, you will be accompanied by both an Achuar and a Naturalist guide. These activities range from short hikes, leisurely canoe and kayak rides to more strenuous and demanding hikes that may take the whole day. Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve is a unique project., the local Achuar make up a majority of the staff, receive a monthly rent from the lodge and will inherit the business outright by 2011. As a result of this project, the Achuar nation has found an alternative to destructive practices in their land. Kapawi has been prized by Conservation International with the Ecotourism Excellence Award 2000.
