PERU’S ASTRID & GASTON RESTAURANT IN WORLD’S TOP 50
Astrid y Gaston, a top Peruvian restaurant run by chef Gaston Acurio, has been ranked 42th in S.Pellegrino’s annual list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Organized by Restaurant magazine, the S.Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is an annual snapshot of the opinions and experiences of over 800 international restaurant industry experts.
Danish restaurant Noma was named as the world’s best restaurant. For the second consecutive year Rene Redzepi’s restaurant topped the voting in the annual awards – widely considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of the restaurant world.

MACHU PICCHU RUINS
Following UNESCO recommendations, authorities have declared that starting July 2011, the maximum daily capacity of visitors to Machu Picchu will be 2500. Due to the MP´s anniversary celebrations and local festivities in Peru (July 2011) the max. capacity was reached and some travelers were not able to visit the Citadel of Machu Picchu.
Please note the following:

The entrance to Huayna Picchu has also new restrictions.
• 2 daily entrance shifts : 7am to 8 am & 10am to 11am.
• Maximum capacity of 200 travelers per shift.

Jim Carrey visits Machu Picchu (seriously)!
The popular Canadian actor Jim Carrey visited the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu on June 30th. Jim Carrey who traveled as a regular tourist traveled first by train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes and then by bus to Machu Picchu, he was recognized by locals and visitors who greeted him and also took pictures with him.
Always showing his good humor, on more than one occasion he said that he was fascinated with the trip and impressed with the architecture of the Incas. He also tried famous Peruvian cuisine. For example, he dinned on Quinoa Taboulé (a salad made of this nutritious Andean grain used by the Incas) and tried Mate de Coca (Coca Tea). Before leaving the Imperial City, he walked around the Plaza de Armas and purchased alpaca fabrics.
The prestigious magazine National Geographic honors the centenary of the Machu Picchu discovery and publishes in its last edition an extensive special report that reevaluates the main Peruvian touristic attraction. Under the title “The Genius of the Inca”, it shows the new discoveries that reveal how this Powerful Empire was forged.
Additionally, National Geographic portal (www.ngm.com) includes diverse links which complement this note, such as an interactive map that shows the Inca Empire extension, the original article written by American expeditionary Hiram Bingham and published in 1913, and also photos of his expedition sponsored by Yale University and the National Geographic Society at that time.
Starting Feb. 21, 2011, Jack Hanna’s “Into the Wild” will begin airing a series of episodes filmed in Peru showcasing the country’s rich Amazonian wildlife offerings. Filmed on board the M/V Aqua , the series of episodes will air on various networks across the country and will feature pink dolphins, Amazonian manatees, rare river otters and other exotic fauna and flora found in the remote Peruvian Amazon. The three-episode series on Peru was filmed this past fall with Jack Hanna and his crew traveling to and exploring the Peruvian Amazon by land and river. While filming on board the M/V Aqua vessel, Jack and crew explored the Pacaya Samiria Reserve – one of the most remote areas of the Amazon only seen by a handful of tourists each year. Giant water lilies, sloth, howler monkeys and flirty pink dolphin were some of the wildlife highlights of their excursions into the Pacaya Samiria Reserve. In addition to this, Jack and crew also visited the Manatee and Dolphin Rescue Center in Iquitos. Here, the group observed first-hand while biologists and volunteers cared for endangered Amazon manatees and dolphins. Jack Hanna’s “Into the Wild” is set to be one of the most dynamic and in depth views into the Peruvian Amazon’s wildlife experiences and tourism offerings.
